Foot Pain/Plantar Fascitis/Heel Spur...

SYMPTOMS: Pain in the sole of the foot or more specifically in the heel itself, may indicate a heel spur or plantar fascitis.  Pain is greater in the morning and after long periods of rest.  "Plantar Fascitis" refers to inflammation of the thin soft layer that lies in between the muscles in the foot.

CAUSES: One of the major causes for foot pain is improperly fitted or uncomfortable footwear, ie. high heels. If you are more than ten percent over your ideal body weight, you are at increased risk for developing foot problems.  Also, landing hard on the ball of the foot, or injury during quick running starts can cause fascitis to begin. Left untreated, inflammation of the soft tissue in the foot promotes calcium build up in the sole of foot, leaving one with a painful heel spur.

TREATMENT: Chiropractors treat heel spurs and plantar fascitis using ultrasound to break up the boney deposits.  Chiropractic manipulation will be performed on the joints in the foot as well as the low back.  Your chiropractor may also prescribe home exercises to stretch the tight plantar fascia in the sole of the foot.  The chiropractor will also instruct you to avoid activities that aggravate the condition.   In some instances, the chiropractor will fit the individual with customized shoe inserts, called orthotics, to reduce the stress placed on the joints in the foot.  If necessary, a referral will be made to a foot specialist or orthopedic surgeon.
