Safety...

Chiropractic care is extremely safe. When compared to the number of illnesses and deaths that will occur this year from the use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, the number of serious complications from chiropractic treatment is extremely low. The use of oral contraceptives is considered to be safe by the medical profession, but of every 100,000 healthy women under 40 who take birth control pills, 28 of them will suffer a stroke.  Statistically, this translates into 1.4 of every 5,000 healthy women. In comparison, a study by the Rand Corporation found that a serious adverse reaction from a cervical spine (neck) manipulation occurs less than once in 1 million treatments.
Chiropractic is much safer than many other everyday activities that people engage in. A study titled “The reality and acceptance of risk,” published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1980, found an even greater “voluntary risk” of death per person per year from many common procedures and activities.

Risk of Death

Voluntary Risk

Per Person Per Year

Soccer, football

1 in 25,000

Taking contraceptive pills

1 in 5,000

Power boating

1 in 5,900

Skiing

1 in 430,000

Pregnancy (UK)

1 in 4,350

When you consider the millions of chiropractic adjustments that are delivered worldwide on a daily basis, chiropractic care is much safer than many other everyday activities that people engage in.
